Responsible Care

Responsible Care® is the chemistry industry's commitment to sustainability - the betterment of society, the environment and the economy. Its ethic and principles compel companies to innovate for safer and more environmentally friendly products and processes, and to work cooperatively to identify and eliminate harm throughout the entire life cycle of their products.

Responsible Care is our commitment to continuous improvement of all aspects of the chemistry industry's environmental, health and safety performance and to ensuring openness about its activities and its achievements.

Our members are expected to seek out your concerns and address them.

Responsible Care covers all aspects of a company's business, including environmental protection, resource conservation, occupational health and safety, process safety, research and development, transportation, product stewardship, purchasing, security and social responsibility. It requires engagement with plant-site neighbours, communities along transportation corridors, emergency responders, critics and advocates, as well as with governments at all levels, to advance laws and regulations in support of sustainability.

Launched in 1985 by the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (formerly the Canadian Chemical Producers' Association - CCPA), Responsible Care's rigorous ethic has spread to more than 50 countries around the world. The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada's member companies are widely recognized as global leaders in business responsibility.

In this section of the website, you'll find a wealth of information about Responsible Care, how it works and its benefits.

This reverification team found that the Responsible Care ethic as it pertains to internal environmental,
health and safety issues is well understood and entrenched in the company’s EH&S management system.
To a very large degree it guides the daily actions and decisions of the company’s management team and
its employees. It is the company’s externalization of Responsible Care, the “Being Seen To Be Doing
The Right Thing”, that gives the team concern. We do, as always, also see opportunities for
improvement elsewhere in the company’s management system. These will also be mentioned in the text
of the report.

The Nexen Chemical division is a member of the C.C.P.A. and their various chemical facilities had received Responsible Care® reverification to the 2002-2005 Responsible Care® protocol. As a unique corporate objective in 2002 Nexen Inc., the parent company, chose to apply the Responsible Care® codes and ethic to the oil and gas division and requested an in-place verification of the Balzac, Alberta gas processing facility. This facility received verification in January 2003. As a continuing commitment to Responsible Care® the company requested an in-place verification of their petroleum facilities in the Republic of Yemen, Canadian Nexen Petroleum Yemen (C.N.P.Y.). To be included in the verification were the seismic and drilling process, crude processing facility, a 130 kilometer pipeline and a crude shipping terminal at Ash Shihr on the Gulf of Aden. As a result of the Balzac verification the team had a good understanding of the process flow from the initial seismic exploration through to final product shipment; however, process flow charts, facility pictures and descriptions and the responses to the 151 code element questions provided an excellent base for understanding the Yemen operations.
