Responsible Care Verification

To help Chemistry Industry Association of Canada companies assure themselves and the public that the ethic and practices of Responsible Care® are indeed in place and driving continuous improvement, the Responsible Care verification process was developed with the involvement and continuing oversight of outside stakeholders.  This process has three purposes:
  • To help the companies improve
  • To help the industry improve
  • To improve credibility
Every three years companies are verified by teams of industry experts, public advocates and local citizens, who write a consensus report summarizing the verification process and players, opportunities for improvement, findings requiring corrective action and successful practices. Once the team has successfully completed their work (with repeat visits as necessary) the company is presented with a verification certificate.

New companies are verified three years after joining the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada using a comprehensive Responsible Care-in-Place Verification protocol, with subsequent triennial verifications following a more focused protocol. Verification reports are made available to their local communities and other interested parties by the verified company and by the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada through this website.

The Nexen Chemical division is a member of the C.C.P.A. and their various chemical facilities had received Responsible Care® reverification to the 2002-2005 Responsible Care® protocol. As a unique corporate objective in 2002 Nexen Inc., the parent company, chose to apply the Responsible Care® codes and ethic to the oil and gas division and requested an in-place verification of the Balzac, Alberta gas processing facility. This facility received verification in January 2003. As a continuing commitment to Responsible Care® the company requested an in-place verification of their petroleum facilities in the Republic of Yemen, Canadian Nexen Petroleum Yemen (C.N.P.Y.). To be included in the verification were the seismic and drilling process, crude processing facility, a 130 kilometer pipeline and a crude shipping terminal at Ash Shihr on the Gulf of Aden. As a result of the Balzac verification the team had a good understanding of the process flow from the initial seismic exploration through to final product shipment; however, process flow charts, facility pictures and descriptions and the responses to the 151 code element questions provided an excellent base for understanding the Yemen operations.

At the conclusion of the two day visit the team were unanimous in the approval
that BLACHFORD has been, and continues to be in compliance with the
guidelines, general principles and codes of practice of Responsible Care.
There were no significant findings but some areas and opportunities for
improvement can be found in the body of this report. The team does not see a
need to re-visit Blachford as we are confident those matters will be dealt with
quickly.
